Description
Miskimon Retractor
The Miskimon retractor is a self-retaining retractor for neurosurgery. It holds wound edges apart on its own, so nobody needs to stand and pull.
Self-retaining exposure
Surgeons often call this pattern a cerebellar retractor, because it suits posterior fossa work. Its toothed arms grip the tissue while the frame stays open. That frees the assistant’s hands for suction or irrigation.
Blunt or sharp teeth
We list the Miskimon at 22 cm with teeth given as 7 x 7. You can choose blunt or sharp teeth. Blunt teeth press gently on soft tissue, while sharp teeth bite more firmly into tough scalp or muscle.
Where it fits
Surgeons place it after the skin and muscle incision, before the bone work starts. Then it keeps the field open for burr holes and craniotomy steps. It also works in some spinal exposures where a deep self-retaining frame helps.
Blunt or sharp: how to decide
Choose sharp teeth if you want a secure hold in thick tissue. Instead, choose blunt teeth when you worry about tearing or bleeding at the edges. Many departments stock both, so the surgeon can decide on the day.
Caring for your Miskimon retractor
Rinse the teeth and joints straight after use, since tissue lodges between them. Next, scrub them with a soft brush and neutral detergent. Dry the retractor fully, lubricate moving parts and sterilize it open.

Ordering and support
We cover this retractor with a three-year warranty on workmanship defects. It goes through a hand inspection in Atlanta, and after that we ship it. Our FAQ pages answer common purchase questions. Buyers can also compare our steel against ASTM F899, the surgical instrument standard. For a smaller retractor with 3 x 4 teeth, see the scalp contour retractor. In addition, the neurosurgery shelf lists similar tools.
