Description
Adson Periosteal Raspatory
The Adson periosteal raspatory lifts periosteum and attached soft tissue away from bone. Surgeons use it during cranial and spinal exposures, just before drilling or biting bone.
What the raspatory does
A raspatory works like a small scraper with a controlled edge. Because it pushes along the bone surface, it separates tissue without deep cutting. As a result, the bone underneath stays clean and ready for the next instrument.
Four blade widths
We offer the raspatory with a 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 or 8.0 mm blade. The narrow blades reach into tight spaces, such as around a small burr hole. Meanwhile, the wider blades clear a larger area in fewer strokes.
Its place in an exposure
First, the surgeon makes the skin and periosteal incision. Then the raspatory peels the periosteum back to show the bone. For example, a team might use a narrow width near a bony edge and a wider one on flat skull.
Choosing a width
Match the blade to the space you usually work in. If you do mostly small openings, the 5.0 or 6.0 mm width fits well. However, broader cranial work often calls for 7.0 or 8.0 mm, so some buyers order two widths.
Caring for your Adson periosteal raspatory
Rinse off tissue as soon as you finish, then brush the blade on both sides. Next, look along the edge for damage. Once dry, send it through your department’s usual sterilization routine.

Order and warranty
Each raspatory ships with our three-year warranty, which answers for poor workmanship. Every blade gets a hand check at our Atlanta facility before shipment. If you have a question about sizes, our FAQ is a good first stop. We refer to ASTM F899 since it sets out steels for surgical instruments. For general stripping in one size, you could add the Adson elevator. Finally, browse more tools in the neurosurgery section.
Supplied for professional use. Our care and cleaning page discusses photo differences and the nickel found in stainless steel; the shipping page gives delivery estimates.
