Description
Adson Dura Hook
The Adson dura hook is a slender hook that raises the dura mater clear of the underlying brain or cord. Surgeons use it to tent the membrane before they open it or while they place stay sutures.
Lifting the dura safely
The dura lies directly over delicate neural tissue. So, the surgeon needs a way to raise it without touching what lies beneath. A fine hook catches the membrane and draws it upward, which creates a small working gap.
Plain and blunt patterns
We carry two versions of the Adson dura hook, both 20 cm long. One has a plain hook and the other has a blunt tip. The blunt pattern lowers the chance of piercing the membrane, while the plain hook grips a little more firmly.
Its role during closure and opening
At the start, the hook elevates the dura so the first cut stays shallow. Later, it can also hold an edge up while the surgeon passes a needle. In addition, some teams use it to check the dural edge during closure.
Deciding which tip to order
Think about how often you work over thin or adherent dura. In that case, the blunt version may feel safer. On the other hand, surgeons who want a positive catch often prefer the plain hook, and many trays hold one of each.
Caring for your Adson dura hook
Wipe the tip gently after use because a bent hook no longer lifts cleanly. Next, rinse and brush the shaft, then dry it completely. Finally, protect the tip with a guard or a silicone mat inside the sterilization tray.
