Description
Penfield Dura Dissector
The Penfield dura dissector is a classic neurosurgical dissector. Surgeons use it to free dura from bone and to separate tissue planes in cranial and spinal work.
Why Penfields are everywhere
Few neurosurgical trays lack a Penfield. Because the figures differ in shape, one set covers many tasks. For example, surgeons use them to strip dura, probe edges and lift tissue.
Five figures
We offer Figure 1 at 17.5 cm, Figure 2 and Figure 3 at 19.5 cm, and Figure 4 at 21.5 cm. Finally, Figure 5 comes in at 29 cm. Each figure has its own working-end shape.
Uses across the case
During a craniotomy, surgeons use a Penfield to free dura around burr holes. In spine surgery, they also use one under the lamina before a Kerrison bite. Later, it helps check the foramen and nerve roots.
Which figure to buy
Many surgeons buy a full set of five. However, if you need only one or two, tell us the tasks you do most. Then we can suggest the figures that suit them.
Caring for your Penfield dura dissector
Keep the tips free of blood during use by wiping them often. After surgery, scrub both ends in a neutral cleaning solution and rinse well. Dry completely, then sterilize with the tips protected.

Ordering Penfield dissectors
Each Penfield comes with our three-year warranty, so any defect in workmanship gets fixed. We check every figure by hand in Atlanta before it goes out. The FAQ area explains ordering in more detail. Our steel follows ASTM F899, the standard for surgical instrument alloys. For a dissector in three lengths, try the Olivecrona dura dissector. You can also shop the full neurosurgery section.
Professional use only. Because photos of five figures can mislead, our care and sterilization notes explain images and the nickel content of steel. See the returns page for exchanges.
