Recognising the #24G Pattern

First, confirm that the incision reaches bone along its whole length. Next, seat the edge under the periosteum and keep it in contact with the cortical plate. Then push forward with short, firm strokes, rocking gently to release attachments. As a result, the flap comes up as a single full-thickness layer.

During implant surgery, the elevator exposes the ridge for drilling and later holds the flap aside. In addition, it helps reveal the buccal plate when a graft is planned. Because it does so many jobs, many teams keep two on the tray.

A dull edge tears tissue rather than lifting it. Therefore, check the working end under magnification from time to time and resharpen or replace it when needed.
