Description
Woodward Root Elevators
Woodward root elevators come in two figures, Fig. 15 and Fig. 16. Many surgeons keep both on the same tray so the right one is close at hand. Each figure sells on its own, which makes it easy to add the one you lack.
Two Figures, One Tray Slot Each
Think of the pair as a small team. Fig. 15 and Fig. 16 differ in form, and each suits some roots better than others. So the simplest plan is to try both on a typodont, then note which one you reach for first. After that, set them in the tray in your usual order.
Choosing Between Fig. 15 and Fig. 16
Match the figure to the root and to your access. For example, a front root often gives a direct line of approach. By contrast, a back root may call for a different reach. Your own feel matters as much as any chart.

- Fig. 16: the companion figure.
- Both: a common choice for a full extraction tray.
Wedge, Rotate, Then Lift
Every root elevator works by wedging, rotation and leverage. First, place the tip in the PDL space. Then apply slow, controlled force with a firm finger rest. Avoid resting force on the neighboring tooth, unless it is coming out as well. Also, when an implant is planned, guard the buccal plate.
Replacing One Woodward Figure
Tips wear, and tools sometimes go missing between cycles. Instead of buying a new pair, you can order only the figure you need. Simply check which number is absent from the tray, then reorder it.
Woodward Warranty and Links
Each piece follows our specification and gets a hands-on inspection here in the United States. Its stainless steel meets the ASTM F899 standard for surgical tools. The tool ships non-sterile and turns reusable once you clean and sterilise it. Fig. 15 and Fig. 16 alike carry three years against manufacturing defects as our written promise.
