Description

White Excavators

The White excavator is a spoon-style hand instrument for removing softened, carious dentine. Dentists use excavators when they want tactile control near the pulp, or when a rotary instrument is not the best choice. Our White range comes in six numbered patterns, listed simply by number.

Numbers 5, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20

The options on this page are 5, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20. Each number is a distinct White pattern from our supplier listing. However, the listing provides no written dimensions or drawings alongside those numbers. Therefore we do not state spoon diameters or shank angles here. Please compare the photos to see how each numbered excavator differs before you order.

Matching Numbers to Your Tray

Most dentists order by number because their existing cassette already holds a White pattern they like. If you are replacing one, simply match the number stamped on the old instrument. When you are starting fresh, choosing a few neighbouring numbers, for example 17, 18 and 19, gives a small spread to try. Then keep the ones you reach for most often.

Hand Excavation in Practice

Excavation is slow, careful work. The clinician scoops with light strokes, checking tissue hardness as they go. As a result, a comfortable handle and a reliable edge matter more than speed. In addition, keeping two of your favourite number lets one sit in the sterilizer while the other stays in use.

Protecting the White Spoon Edge

Every numbered White pattern is stainless steel and each excavator number passes a United States visual check pre-dispatch. White excavators travel unsterilized; clean and autoclave each 5, 14 or 20 before it meets a patient. Also, store them in a cassette so the spoon edges stay keen. Each numbered pattern carries three years against manufacturing defects as standard White coverage.

Steel for these excavators follows ASTM F899, listed in the FDA standards directory. See more hand instruments in Diagnostic, Periodontal and Restorative Instruments, compare the Darby-Perry Excavators for another named excavator series, and visit our FAQs with questions.
