Van Buren Dilating Bougie

The classic male urethral sound, 28 cm, with a long shallow double curve that follows the bulbar and prostatic urethra rather than forcing a line through it. Used to calibrate and to dilate a stricture, one size at a time.

Sizing and sets

Charriere 8 to 36 in fifteen steps. Dilation is done by working upward through consecutive sizes, so the instrument is most useful as a set; the complete set is available as a single order, and individual sizes are listed for replacing one that has been damaged or for extending a partial set.

Against the Guyon and Dittel patterns

Van Buren carries the longest and most pronounced curve of the three bougies stocked here. Guyon is shorter at 26 cm with a tighter distal bend, and Dittel is essentially straight. The curve is chosen for the anatomy and the stricture site, not by preference.

Care

A bougie is judged entirely by its surface. Inspect the full length under good light before every use and retire anything showing a scratch, a burr or pitting. Clean along the length rather than across it, dry fully, and store in a rack that supports the curve instead of loading it.
