Tubingen Suture Forceps
The Tubingen suture forceps is a 10cm tool for handling fine thread and the tissue it passes through. Tips come either curved or straight. Each shape works in corneal and cataract closure, so the choice comes down to your angle of view.
Curved tips or straight tips
In-line Tubingen tips follow the handle. That makes them easy to aim, and many surgeons find them simple to learn on. The bowed version angles off the axis of the shaft. As a result, your hand sits out of the way, and you get a clearer view of the knot under the microscope.
A 10cm length for a pencil grip
At 10cm, the forceps rests across the web of the thumb. You hold it like a pen and steer with the fingertips. Therefore, the tips move in small, steady steps, which suits tying and trimming very fine suture.
Jobs it handles in a closure
- Grasping a suture end as you throw a knot
- Holding a wound lip while the needle passes
- Rotating a knot to bury it
- Picking out cut thread at a later visit
Pairing it with other tools
Most surgeons use this forceps with a micro needle holder. In addition, some keep both tip shapes on one tray. Then they can switch to the curved pair when the angle gets awkward near the lid or nose.
Keeping the tips true
Fine tips can cross over if they take a knock. So set the forceps down gently and store it with a cover on the tips. Also check, before each case, that the tips close together along their full length.
Tubingen forceps ship non-sterile. Give the Tubingen pair your own cleaning and sterilization before first use and between cases. The slim jaws use stainless matched to ASTM F899. We back each Tubingen tip shape for three years against manufacturing defects; Tubingen material and finish both count.
