Description
Troutman-Castroviejo Corneal Scissors
The Troutman-Castroviejo corneal scissors are a 10cm pair for cutting the cornea. Surgeons use the pattern in corneal surgery, such as keratoplasty, where clean cuts matter. The size suits a fine, steady grip under the microscope.
Why corneal scissors differ
The cornea is tough yet thin. So corneal scissors need fine blades that close cleanly along their whole length. A ragged cut can affect how the wound heals and how well a graft sits. That is why blade condition matters so much with this pattern, and why many teams track sharpening dates.
The role in keratoplasty
In a corneal transplant, the surgeon may use scissors to finish or shape the cut around the graft bed. Then the edges need to meet well for suturing. For this reason, many surgeons keep a dedicated pair just for corneal work.
Handling at 10cm
At 10cm, the pair rests lightly in the fingers. Small finger moves open and close the blades. As a result, you can take short, controlled bites instead of long snips.
Troutman-Castroviejo edge care
- Cut only tissue, never suture or drapes
- Close the blades before you set them down
- Store them with a tip guard
- Send them for sharpening when the cut feels rough
Washing corneal blades
Rinse the blades soon after use and open them to clean the joint. Then dry them fully. Finally, check the cut on a test material before the next case.
These Troutman-Castroviejo blades ship non-sterile and come back into use after cleaning and sterilization. Stainless steel to ASTM F899 forms both blades. Our Troutman-Castroviejo warranty lasts three years against manufacturing defects; Troutman-Castroviejo sharpening wear is separate.
