Description
Barraquer Corneal Scissors
The Barraquer corneal scissors are an 11cm pair for cutting corneal tissue. The pattern has a long history in corneal surgery. Its length gives a steady hold, which helps when you take careful bites around a curved edge.
Clean cuts in tough tissue
Cornea is dense, so dull blades tend to chew rather than cut. These scissors aim for a clean, even close from heel to tip. That way, the cut edge stays smooth and ready for suturing.
When surgeons use them
Common uses include shaping the cut in keratoplasty and extending a corneal wound. Some surgeons also use them in other anterior segment cases. Even so, it pays to keep them for corneal work only, to protect the edge.
11cm compared with 10cm
Our Troutman-Castroviejo pair is 10cm. By contrast, this 11cm pair gives a little more reach and a longer grip. If you have large hands, or like more handle behind the fingers, the longer size may suit you.
Habits that protect the edge
- Keep them away from suture and gauze
- Close the tips before placing them down
- Use a tip guard in storage
- Plan regular sharpening checks
Barraquer scissor cleaning
First, rinse the blades soon after the case. Next, open the pair and work around the box joint gently with a small brush. Then let the Barraquer blades dry completely before they go for sterilization. Damp joints can stiffen over time.
The Barraquer pair ships non-sterile. Every Barraquer blade returns to the tray after your cleaning and sterilization routine. Both blades use stainless steel meeting ASTM F899. Barraquer scissors carry Barraquer cover for three years against manufacturing defects; Barraquer joints and blades count.
