Description
Toynbee Ear Specula
Toynbee ear specula carry the name of a pioneer of otology. Clinicians use these metal funnels to open the ear canal for examination and minor procedures.
Simple and reusable
A metal speculum has no moving parts. So it cleans easily and survives many sterilization cycles. It also gives a firm, smooth channel for curettes, hooks and suction. As a result, many clinics prefer metal for treatment work.
Sizes offered
Choose a 3, 4, 5 or 6.5 mm opening. The 3 mm size especially fits small or narrow canals. The 6.5 mm size, by contrast, opens a generous view in adult ears. Meanwhile, the middle sizes cover most routine work.
Everyday otoscopy
Doctors use the speculum with a headlight, head mirror or microscope. For instance, they may inspect the drum, clear debris or place a wick. A tray with all four sizes then lets them adjust quickly.
Tips on selection
First, start with the size that fits most of your patients. Then add a smaller one for children and a larger one for wide canals. Otherwise, order all four and keep them together.
Caring for your Toynbee ear specula
Wash the specula after each use, before wax can harden. Also, brush the inner surface gently and rinse away any detergent. Dry them fully and sterilize them in a covered tray.
