Description

Thiess Mallet

The Thiess mallet is a compact hammer with a 20 mm head. You can choose a solid brass head or a lead-filled one, depending on the feel you want.

Brass or lead filled

Brass gives a dense, smooth strike that is gentler on steel handles. On the other hand, the lead-filled head carries extra mass and less rebound. Both suit fine bone work.

Size

The mallet measures about 16.5 cm and weighs roughly 140 g. Therefore it sits among the lightest mallets we offer. It fits easily on small trays.

Uses for the Thiess mallet

Oral, ENT and hand surgeons use it with fine chisels and gouges. It also helps with small osteotomes in the foot. Implant teams use it during ridge work.

Which head to pick

Choose brass if you want a smooth, quiet tap. However, choose lead filled when the bone is a bit firmer and you want less bounce. Some teams keep both.

Why brass at all

Brass is softer than surgical steel, so it marks the mallet rather than the instrument. Therefore it protects chisel tops over time. Meanwhile, the lead-filled option trades some of that softness for a deader blow.

Thiess mallet options

  • Solid brass head or lead-filled head
  • 20 mm face, about 16.5 cm long
  • Light, compact pattern
  • Supplied non-sterile

Cleaning a brass head

Brass can tarnish, so dry it carefully after washing. Then inspect the faces for dents. Keep the mallet in its tray slot during storage.
