The Thiersch transplantation knife takes its name from the Thiersch graft, a thin split thickness skin graft. At 20 cm, it is a compact free-hand knife for smaller donor areas.

Thin grafts by hand

A Thiersch graft is thin, so it takes readily at the recipient site. With this knife, you control the depth through angle and pressure. Keep the donor skin taut, and the strokes stay even.

When to choose the Thiersch transplantation knife

Pick it for small and medium donor sites, where a shorter knife handles more easily. For larger areas, the 25 cm Rehn knife gives a longer stroke.

Care

Clean the blade straight after use, then dry it completely. Also protect the edge in storage.

Thiersch grafts in practice

First, surgeons use thin grafts to cover granulating wounds and burns, where fast take matters most. However, thin grafts can contract more over time than thicker ones. So the choice of graft depth depends on the site and on the result you need. The knife gives you the control to follow that choice. For that reason, many burn units keep a Thiersch knife and a longer graft knife together. Also, a fresh edge makes the thinnest grafts easier to cut. Finally, inspect the edge under good light before each session begins.
