Description
Stevenson Eye Speculum
The Stevenson eye speculum is a 7 cm lid holder for adult eye work. It keeps both lids apart so the cornea and conjunctiva stay in view. Many teams keep it as a second mid-size option next to other 7 cm patterns.
Stevenson or another 7 cm design?
Several of our specula share the 7 cm size, including the Mueller and the Mellinger-Axenfeld. They differ in frame and arm shape. So compare the photos, then pick the one that feels right in your hand and on your patients.
Patient comfort with the Stevenson
An awake patient feels every bit of pressure. Therefore, use numbing drops as your protocol allows, and talk the patient through each step. Also, open the speculum slowly; sudden spread makes people squeeze.
Exposure the Stevenson provides
It helps with:
- Clear view of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Steady access for minor surface work
- Freeing your other hand during the case
Why keep two 7 cm patterns
Lids vary in shape and tone. When one frame sits poorly, a second design often fits better. So a Stevenson beside your usual 7 cm speculum gives the team a quick fallback.
Stevenson storage and checks
Store the speculum closed, in a slot where the arms will not catch. Before each use, check that the arms are even and smooth. If one arm looks bent, set the tool aside rather than reshape it yourself.
Ordering the Stevenson
Stevenson specula ship unsterile; wash the Stevenson frame and sterilize it, and it stays in service across many lists. Stevenson steel meets ASTM F899. Each Stevenson comes with our standard cover of three years against manufacturing defects. Stevenson buyers can browse the ophthalmology speculum range, or compare the Mueller speculum.
