A wide striking face

A broad face makes it easier to hit the instrument square. As a result, glancing blows become less likely. This helps when the instrument top is small or the angle is awkward.

Who uses the Steinbach mallet

Orthopedic and trauma teams use it for impaction and osteotomies. It also suits graft packing, where a wide face helps. Plaster rooms may use it for other tasks too.

Line the face up with the instrument top before each blow. Then strike with a relaxed wrist. Because the face is broad, small misses still land on target.

Where a broad face helps most

Impactors and tamps often have small, round tops. Consequently, a narrow mallet can glance off them. With the Steinbach face, however, even a slightly off-center blow still lands squarely.
