Description
Spurling Laminectomy Rongeur
The Spurling laminectomy rongeur is a spine rongeur for biting away lamina and disc material. Surgeons rely on it during laminectomy and discectomy, when they need firm, controlled bites of bone and tissue.
Bite and purpose
This pattern takes a 4×10 mm bite. That size removes a useful amount with each squeeze while still giving control. As a result, it suits both opening the lamina and clearing disc material afterward.
Lengths and angles
You can choose 12, 15 or 18 cm. Then pick a straight jaw, or one angled 45 degrees upward or downward. That gives nine combinations, so you can match the rongeur to depth and direction.
Using the angles
A straight Spurling laminectomy rongeur reaches directly ahead. Meanwhile, the up and down angles bite toward the side of the disc space the straight jaw cannot reach. Many surgeons keep one of each angle on a lumbar tray.
How to choose
First, pick the length that suits your usual depth; 15 cm is a common middle ground. Next, decide whether you need one angle or a set of three. If you use a bayonet pattern too, see our bayonet-shaped Spurling range.
Caring for your Spurling rongeur
Clear bone and disc fragments from the jaws as soon as possible. Then scrub inside the cups and around the hinge with a nylon brush. Rinse, dry completely and sterilize with the jaws open slightly.
