Description
Spurling Laminectomy Rongeur, Bayonet-Shaped
The bayonet Spurling rongeur is a laminectomy rongeur with an offset, bayonet-style shaft. Spine surgeons use it to bite lamina and disc material while the offset keeps their hand out of the line of sight.
Why a bayonet shaft
A bayonet bend moves the handle to one side of the working axis. Therefore, the surgeon can look straight down the shaft, through a microscope or loupes, while biting. That view helps in narrow lumbar and cervical openings.
Twenty-seven combinations
You choose three things. First, the length: 12, 15 or 17 cm. Second, the bite: 4×10, 5×10 or 6×10 mm. Third, the jaw direction, which can be straight or tilted 45 degrees up or down. Together they give 27 versions.
Matching bite to task
The 4×10 mm bite suits finer work near neural tissue. Meanwhile, the 6×10 mm bite removes more bone per squeeze during the early opening. The 5×10 mm bite sits between them, so it makes a flexible single choice.
Building a set
Many surgeons keep a straight bayonet Spurling rongeur plus one up and one down angle in the same length. Then they add a second bite size if the budget allows. We can help you plan a set, just send us your list.
Caring for your bayonet Spurling rongeur
Flush fragments out of the cups immediately after surgery, before they harden. Next, brush the jaws, the bayonet bend and the pivot. Rinse and dry every surface. Finally, sterilize the rongeur with its jaws a little open.
