Description
Smith-Buie Rectal Speculum
The Smith-Buie rectal speculum is a long-established anal retractor. This model measures 15 cm overall, with a blade of 75 x 23 mm.
Where it fits
Surgeons use the Smith-Buie pattern for anorectal operations and examination under anesthesia. Also, the 23 mm blade width gives good exposure without overstretching.
Choosing between patterns
If you need a self-retaining frame with changeable blades, consider the Parks. However, many surgeons keep the Smith-Buie for its simple, familiar handling.
Setting up for surgery
Place the patient in the position your team prefers, often prone jackknife or lithotomy. Then lubricate the blades and insert them closed. Open them gradually until the field is clear, and avoid more stretch than the case needs. Also, reposition the blades as you move around the canal, so each area gets good light. Because the blade width is fixed, some surgeons keep a second, narrower instrument on the tray. In addition, a suction tip and a good light source make the most of the exposure it gives.
Care of the Smith-Buie rectal speculum
Take care of the joint first, because debris collects there. Scrub it with a nylon brush, rinse in clean water and let it dry fully. After that, a drop of instrument lubricant keeps the action smooth.
