Alan Parks Rectal Speculum

The Parks rectal speculum is a self-retaining retractor for anorectal surgery. It holds the anal canal open, so both of your hands stay free.

Blades in the set

This 13.5 cm model comes with two pairs of side blades and a center blade. Therefore you can change the exposure to suit the patient and the procedure.

Where surgeons use it

Colorectal surgeons use the Parks pattern for hemorrhoidectomy, fistula surgery and other anal procedures. In addition, the self-retaining action reduces the need for an assistant.

Setting up the retractor

Insert the frame with the blades closed and well lubricated. Next, open the screw slowly until you reach the exposure you need, and avoid stretching the sphincter more than the procedure requires. Also, choose the blade pair that suits the patient’s build, since a smaller pair gives a gentler hold. When you need extra exposure, add the center blade. After the case, close the screw fully before you remove the frame. Also, keep a spare set of blades on the shelf, because a bent blade can take the retractor out of service.

Care of the Parks rectal speculum

Remove the blades after each case. Then clean the frame, the screw and each blade separately, and dry them fully. Finally, check the screw turns smoothly before reassembly.
