Description
Sims Uterine Dilator
The Sims uterine dilator widens the cervical canal with a spreading action. At about 28 cm, it offers a compact alternative to longer spreading patterns.
Spreading rather than tapering
Tapered rods open the canal by passing one size after another. By contrast, a spreading dilator enters narrow and then widens. So the surgeon controls the opening from outside the canal.
The Sims pattern
This instrument follows the Sims pattern, a long-standing gynecologic design. Many surgeons already know Sims instruments from the speculum of the same name. Therefore, it fits naturally into a tray built around Sims pieces.
Compact length
About 28 cm long, it sits comfortably on a standard minor gynecology tray. Plus, the shorter frame keeps your grip closer to the work. In addition, it stores easily in a tray of normal depth.
Choosing between patterns
Pick the Sims uterine dilator when you want a spreading action in a shorter instrument. Alternatively, the Goodell pattern gives more reach at 34 cm. Meanwhile, graduated Hank or Pratt dilators suit a size-by-size approach.
Reprocessing Sims uterine dilator
Rinse the blades straight after use so blood cannot dry on them. Then wash the joint area with a soft brush and warm detergent. Afterward, dry the instrument and keep it in a tray where the blades cannot bend.
