Goodell Uterine Dilator

The Goodell uterine dilator opens the cervical canal by spreading two blades apart. A screw mechanism sets the opening, so the dilator holds its position once set.

How the blades spread

The two blades enter the canal closed, side by side. Then turning the screw moves them apart in small, controlled steps. As a result, the surgeon can widen the canal gradually rather than all at once.

Self-retaining action

Because the screw holds the setting, the blades stay open without a hand on them. That way, the assistant keeps both hands free for other instruments. However, check the opening often and adjust the screw slowly.

A 34 cm reach

At 34 cm, this spreader gives a long reach from grip to blade tips. So your hand stays well clear of the speculum and the field. Also, the long frame suits work through a vaginal speculum.

When to choose it

Gynecologists reach for a Goodell uterine dilator when they want a spreading action rather than a series of tapered rods. Alternatively, graduated dilators such as the Hank or Pratt pattern widen the canal size by size. Plus, many trays carry both styles.

Cleaning Goodell uterine dilator

Open the screw fully before cleaning so water reaches between the blades. Next, brush the threads and the blade surfaces, then rinse away all residue. Finally, dry the spreader completely and store it with the blades closed.
