Description
Simon Retractor
The Simon retractor holds tissue back in the deep abdomen and pelvis during open surgery. It measures 28 cm and carries a long 115 mm blade.
Two widths
Choose a blade width of 22 mm or 27 mm for your case. So the narrower blade fits a tight or narrow pelvis. Meanwhile, the wider one holds back more tissue at the same depth.
Long blade
A 115 mm blade reaches well below the edge of the wound. Then the surgeon can see deep pelvic structures without extra hands. Because of this, dissection low in the pelvis stays in view.
Length
At 28 cm, the handle sits well clear of the operating field. However, such a long lever needs a steady, patient grip. Therefore the assistant should brace the forearm during long holds.
Pelvic cases
Gynecologic and colorectal teams often use a Simon retractor deep in the pelvis. Also, general surgeons pick it for deep abdominal work. Plus, both widths fit in the same tray without trouble.
Reprocessing Simon retractor
Wash the long blade from the tip back to the handle after every case. Next, rinse it and check that the blade has not bent. Finally, dry it with a lint-free cloth and lay it flat for storage.
