Description
Strandell-Stille Retractor
The Strandell-Stille retractor measures about 19 cm and comes smooth or toothed. It lets you pick the grip that suits the tissue in front of you.
Smooth version
The smooth version presses against tissue without piercing it. So it suits soft structures, thin membranes and delicate layers. Many surgeons prefer it when working close to vessels, nerves or bowel.
Toothed version
By contrast, the toothed version grips firmer tissue and holds its place. Therefore it resists slipping on skin and fascia. Then the view stays stable during dissection.
An 18 to 19 cm length
The length suits wounds of moderate depth in general and soft tissue surgery. Also, it keeps the assistant’s hand back from the field and out of the light. Plus, it stays light enough to hold through long cases.
Choosing a version
Consider the tissue your team retracts most often, and how firm it tends to be. Alternatively, stock one of each so the team can switch mid-case. Either way, the Strandell-Stille retractor gives a consistent reach from one case to the next.
Reprocessing Strandell-Stille retractor
Clean the working end right after use, paying extra attention to the toothed version. Next, brush any teeth carefully and rinse off detergent. Finally, dry the instrument and store smooth and toothed pieces apart so the team picks the right one.
