Description
Simcoe Nucleus Delivery Cannula
The Simcoe nucleus delivery cannula is an irrigating tool for manual cataract surgery. It helps you ease the nucleus out of the eye with a gentle flow of fluid. Many surgeons use it in extracapsular or manual small incision cases.
How irrigation helps delivery
In manual techniques, the nucleus must leave the eye in one piece. Fluid behind the nucleus can push it forward toward the wound. Meanwhile, the cannula tip can guide it. As a result, you place less pressure on the globe.
What you receive
One Simcoe pattern is listed, with no size options. Its features include:
- Irrigating bore for nucleus delivery
- Shape suited to the wound and the nucleus
- Hub for a syringe or an irrigation line
- Reusable stainless design
A typical sequence
First, make sure the wound is large enough for the nucleus. Then place the cannula behind or under the nucleus and start a steady flow. Guide the nucleus to the wound and let the fluid help it out. Finally, check the chamber and the iris before you move on.
When to choose it
Choose this tool when you deliver the whole nucleus by hand. If you use a lens loop instead, an irrigating loop may suit you better. Many surgeons keep both to match each case.
Cleaning and sterilization
Flush the bore right after use, since lens material dries quickly. Next, soak, rinse and dry it. Check the flow before you pack it. Because the Simcoe delivery tool arrives unsterilized, autoclave it before its first case and after every one that follows.
