The Simcoe cortex extractor irrigates and aspirates lens cortex during cataract surgery. Its curved tip reaches around the capsule.

Curved tip

The curve follows the inside of the capsule. As a result, the surgeon can reach cortex under the iris. That helps leave a clean capsule.

How the Simcoe cortex extractor works

One port brings fluid in. Another draws cortex out. Consequently, the chamber stays formed while the cortex comes out.

Typical use

Eye surgeons use it in manual cataract surgery. In addition, it helps in teaching settings. It also serves as a backup to machine aspiration.

Technique

Keep the port facing up while aspirating. Then engage cortex gently. Also, avoid touching the posterior capsule.

Fine forceps and lens tools sit beside it. Together they cover cataract steps. Many eye trays carry one.

Checking flow

Test irrigation and aspiration before use. Then confirm the ports are clear. That avoids surprises during surgery.

Machine systems control flow automatically. In contrast, a manual cannula gives the surgeon direct feel through the syringe. For that reason, many surgeons still keep a Simcoe on the tray as a reliable fallback.
