Description
Sigmoid Notch Retractor
The sigmoid notch retractor seats in the notch at the top of the mandibular ramus. Once seated, it holds the soft tissue up and away from the bone cuts below.
How it seats
The tip hooks over the sigmoid notch. As a result, the retractor stays put without constant pull. Meanwhile, the assistant’s hand can relax.
Size of the sigmoid notch retractor
Its 23 cm body reaches up to the notch through the mouth. In addition, the handle sits outside the lips.
Lit or plain
The lit version carries a fiber optic light to the tip. Consequently, the upper ramus is easy to see. By contrast, the plain version suits headlight users.
Typical use
It suits ramus osteotomies and condylar work. For example, it holds tissue during a vertical ramus cut. It also helps in some fracture repairs.
Handling
Feel for the notch with the tip before applying pull. Then lift steadily. Also, avoid levering on the coronoid process.

Tip inspection
After washing, look along the hooked tip for any bend. Dry the instrument well. In addition, keep the light carrier ends free of scratches.
