Description
Self-Centering Bone Holding Forceps
Self-centering bone holding forceps grip a round bone shaft so it sits in the middle of the jaws. This 26 cm model gives the reach and leverage that long bones need.
Why self-centering matters
A round shaft tends to roll out of flat or offset jaws. In contrast, these jaws close evenly from both sides. Therefore the bone settles in the center and stays there while you work. That keeps the reduction steady and leaves room for a plate along the shaft.
Typical uses
Orthopedic and trauma surgeons use it on the femur, tibia and humerus. It holds the shaft during reduction, then keeps it still while screws go in. Also, it helps when a fracture must be held from one side only, because the opposite side stays clear for the plate.
Choosing a length
At 26 cm, this forceps suits adult long bones. For the forearm or smaller bones, however, a shorter clamp is easier to handle. Many trays therefore carry one long and one short bone holder.
Care
Blood and bone debris collect where the jaws meet. So scrub that area with a soft brush right after use. Then rinse, dry and lubricate the joint. Before sterilization, open and close the forceps to confirm a smooth action.
