Schuknecht Wire Closure Forceps

Schuknecht wire closure forceps are a stapes crimper named after the otologist Harold Schuknecht. Surgeons use them to tighten the wire of a stapes prosthesis on the incus.

A crimper for the prosthesis

Stapes surgery replaces the fixed stapes with a small prosthesis. Its wire hook must then close around the long process of the incus. This forceps does that job with a controlled squeeze.

The 8 cm shaft

We list one version, with an 8 cm shaft. That length lets the tip reach the middle ear through a speculum. Meanwhile, the handle stays outside the canal where the fingers have room.

Working under the microscope

All stapes work happens under magnification, so fine control matters more than force. The surgeon steadies the hand, places the jaws over the wire and closes them slowly. Too much pressure could damage the incus, so a light touch pays off.
