Schuknecht Knife

The Schuknecht knife is a small ear knife for otologic microsurgery. It lets the surgeon cut meatal skin cleanly and divide tiny bands of tissue in the tympanic cavity.

From a leader in otology

Harold Schuknecht shaped much of modern otology and temporal bone research. Therefore, several ear instruments carry his name, including needles, suction tubes and retractors. This blade continues that line.

Vertical or horizontal blade

We offer two versions: one with a vertical blade and one with a horizontal blade. The two orientations let the surgeon cut in different planes without twisting the wrist. So many surgeons keep both on the tray.

Where it helps

A surgeon may reach for this blade to open the meatal skin or to release adhesions close to the ossicles. Also, it can help trim a graft to size. Usually an elevator follows the incision and lifts the flap.

Choosing a version

Think first about the plane of the cuts you make most often. Then choose the matching orientation. If you are unsure, order both and trial them. We can also email pictures of each blade orientation.

Caring for your Schuknecht knife

Clean the knife by hand and keep the edge away from other instruments. Next, flush off the detergent under running water and blot the blade dry. Then store it in its own guarded slot until sterilization.
