Description
Schoemaker-Loth Ligature Scissors
The Schoemaker-Loth scissors cut ligatures and sutures with a hooked tip that catches the thread. Once the hook holds the suture, the blades close and cut cleanly without dragging on tissue.
The hooked tip
A small hook on the lower blade slips under the thread and holds it. Consequently, the cut lands exactly where the user aims, even on tight or buried stitches.
Length of the Schoemaker-Loth scissors
At 12.5 cm, they sit between pocket stitch scissors and long theatre patterns. Therefore, they suit both ward removals and cutting ties in theatre.
In theatre
After the surgeon ties a ligature, the assistant cuts the ends to length. Here, the hook steadies the thread so the tail is left at a safe, even length.
On the ward
During suture removal, the hook raises every stitch clear of the skin. As a result, patients feel only a light tug as the thread comes out.
Choosing ligature scissors
Eiselsberg and Littauer patterns offer different blade shapes. Many departments keep two patterns so staff can pick their favourite.
Keeping the hook sharp
A worn hook slips off fine sutures. For that reason, check the tip under good light and send blunt pairs for service.
