Description
Sauer Eye Speculum
The Sauer eye speculum is a tiny 3 cm lid holder made for infants. Neonatal teams often use it to open the lids for retinal exams in premature babies. Its light frame keeps pressure on the small eye to a minimum.
Built around the infant eye
A baby’s lids are short and soft. So the Sauer uses a small, fine frame that fits without stretching them. It holds the lids apart just enough for a clear view.
Retinal exams in the nursery
Screening for retinopathy of prematurity needs a clear view of the retina. The speculum frees the examiner’s hands for the lens and a depressor. As a result, the exam can be quick and calm.
Sauer speculum pointers
Good practice includes:
- Swaddle and support the baby first
- Use numbing drops if your protocol allows
- Insert and remove with slow, small moves
- Clean and sterilize between babies
Infection control in the NICU
Babies in intensive care have fragile defenses. Therefore, each speculum must go through full cleaning and sterilization before the next baby. Many units keep several Sauers, so one is always ready while others go through processing.
How many Sauers to order
Count your usual exam list, then add spares for the processing cycle. For example, a unit that screens six babies per round may want six or more. That way, no exam waits on the autoclave.
Ordering Sauer specula
Each Sauer ships unsterile; wash and sterilize the tiny Sauer frame before the first baby, and reuse it after every full cycle. Sauer steel meets ASTM F899.
