Description
Root Canal Pluggers
Once a canal is shaped and cones are placed, the filling has to be pressed down so it adapts to the walls. A root canal plugger does that job with a flat-ended working tip that pushes gutta-percha toward the apex. Intrace USA, an Atlanta distributor, sells nine set patterns individually, and each plugger passes a tip check in the United States before dispatch.
Compaction Versus Spreading
A spreader tapers to a point and opens space beside a cone during lateral condensation. In contrast, a plugger is blunt, so it compacts material vertically instead of wedging it aside. Many clinicians use both on the same case. For example, they spread laterally first, then finish with a plugger at the orifice.
Reading the Nine Labels
These pluggers are components from our endodontic sets, and the catalogue names them by code only:
- 7S, 9S and 10S: three patterns marked with a single number and the letter S.
- 1/3, 5/7 and 9/11: paired numbers, which usually indicate two working ends on one handle.
- NC 1/3, NC 5/7 and NC 9/11: the same number pairs carrying the NC prefix as a separate series.
The catalogue does not publish tip diameters for any of them. Therefore, match the label printed on your existing set first, then use the photos to confirm.
Choosing for a Tray
When you rebuild a full endodontic tray, order the same labels your set already holds. Alternatively, if one plugger has bent or gone missing, replace only that label. In addition, keeping a spare of your most used size saves a delay mid-procedure.
Keeping Tips Square
A plugger tip that rounds or bends compacts unevenly. So check each tip under good light, and keep it away from heavy instruments. They come to you non-sterile; the root canal plugger must be cleaned and autoclaved before its first case. Defects from production are covered by our guarantee, which runs three years against manufacturing defects.
Plugger shafts and handles use stainless steel per ASTM F899. See more endodontic tools in our restorative instrument category, combine your plugger with a Spreader For Lateral Condensation, or read our answers to frequent questions.
Meant for trained endodontists and dental clinicians only. Please follow our sterilizing instructions, and check delivery options when planning a tray rebuild.
