Description
Probes with Eye
These probes with eye are slim, blunt rods with a small eye, or hole, near one end. Clinicians use them to explore a channel and to draw a suture or tape through it. We offer 13cm and 15cm lengths.
What the eye is for
The eye works like the eye of a needle. First, you thread a suture or tape through it. Then you pass the probe along a channel and pull the thread through behind it. So one tool both finds the path and carries the thread.
Length and size
Both lengths list a 2.0mm size. Pick the length by how far the channel runs.
- 13cm: shorter channels and close work.
- 15cm: longer reach.
- 2.0mm: the listed size for both lengths.
General uses
Because it is blunt, the probe follows a natural path without cutting. For this reason, surgeons use eyed probes in many areas of minor surgery. In our range, they sit beside other fine tools. However, use them only as your training directs.
Handling the probe
Hold the probe lightly and then let it find its own way. If you meet resistance, stop and adjust the angle. Also, check that the eye has no sharp edge before you thread it.
Cleaning the eye
Thread and tissue can often catch in the eye. So brush through it and rinse after each use. Then dry the probe and check it stays straight. A bent probe can be gently set aside for review.
Your probe order
Eyed probes ship non-sterile, and each one returns to use after cleaning and sterilization. Eyed probe buyers get three years against manufacturing defects in either length. Probe steel meets ASTM F899. For opening the punctum, see the Fish dilator. Browse our wider eye range or check our FAQs for orders.
