Description
Fish Lachrymal Dilator
The Fish lacrimal dilator gently widens the punctum, the tiny tear drain opening on each lid. Clinicians often use a Fish lacrimal dilator before they probe or flush the duct. We offer 14.5cm and 18cm lengths.
What a punctal dilator does
The punctum is very small. So a probe or cannula may not pass without help. A dilator has a tapered tip that slowly opens the punctum as you turn it. Then the next tool can enter with less force.
Lengths and the 2.0mm size
Both lengths list a 2.0mm working size. Choose the length that suits your grip.
- 14.5cm: a shorter, nimble tool.
- 18cm: more length for a full grip.
- 2.0mm: the listed size for both options.
A gentle, rolling motion
First, the clinician places the tip in the punctum. Next, they roll the dilator between thumb and finger while easing it in. Then they follow the line of the canal. Never push hard, because the canal lining is thin.
Partner instruments
Dilation usually comes before another step. For example, a lacrimal cannula may follow to flush the duct. A probe may also follow when the duct needs opening. So the dilator often sits in a small lacrimal set.
Looking after the dilator tip
Wipe the tip clean after use. Then rinse, dry and check it for burrs. A rough tip can harm the punctum, so replace it if you see damage.
Placing a dilator order
Fish dilators come non-sterile; a full reprocess makes each one ready for reuse. Both lengths of the Fish lacrimal dilator have three years against manufacturing defects. Dilator steel meets ASTM F899. To flush the duct next, see the Bangerter lacrimal cannula. Also browse our lacrimal instruments or the FAQ page for clinics.
