Poppen Suction Tube
The Poppen neurosurgical suction tube clears blood and fluid from the neurosurgical field. Surgeons also use a suction tube to move tissue gently while they work.
Why suction matters
In neurosurgery, even a little blood hides important structures. So the surgeon keeps a suction tube in one hand for most of the case. The other hand then holds a dissector, coagulation forceps or scissors.
Gauges and light option
We list the Poppen at 13 cm in gauges from 6 to 12 Fr. French, also called Charriere, measures outside diameter. Every gauge comes with or without fiber optic light, which gives 14 options.
When to choose the light
A lit tube brings light straight to the tip, for example in a deep narrow corridor. Without the light, the tube stays simpler and lighter in the hand. Therefore the choice depends on your usual approach and your light source.
Picking a gauge
Small gauges such as 6 or 7 Fr suit delicate microsurgery. Meanwhile, 10 to 12 Fr clears heavier bleeding faster. Many teams keep two or three gauges ready.
Caring for your Poppen neurosurgical suction tube
Flush the lumen with water right after use so nothing dries inside. Next, pass a cleaning brush of the right size through the tube. Dry the lumen fully, then sterilize it following your facility’s routine and any light cable guidance.

Ordering the Poppen tube
Our three-year warranty applies to this suction tube for any workmanship defect. A person in our Atlanta office inspects it by hand, and only then do we ship. For account and delivery help, see our FAQ list. We name ASTM F899 as the standard for surgical instrument steels. For a longer tube in the same gauges, see the Frazier suction tube. Also, the neurosurgery category offers more options.
For professional use. The care and sterilization guide covers photo differences and nickel in our alloys. Our shipping page then explains delivery times.
