Politzer ear specula honor one of the founders of modern otology. Clinicians use these small metal funnels to open the ear canal and see the eardrum.

A small-bore range

This range runs from 2 up to 5 mm. So it leans toward narrow canals, children and fine work. Even so, the 5 mm size still serves many adults.

Four sizes

Choose 2, 3, 4 or 5 mm. The 2 mm size gives access where larger specula will not pass. Meanwhile, the 4 and 5 mm sizes offer more light and room. Most clinics therefore keep at least two.

Uses in the clinic

ENT doctors use these specula for otoscopy and small procedures. For instance, they may clear debris, take a swab or place drops accurately. Pediatric clinics also value the small sizes because children have narrow canals.

Choosing sizes

Think about your patient mix first, since age changes canal width a great deal. If you treat many children, start with 2 and 3 mm. Then add 4 and 5 mm for adults. Otherwise, order all four for full coverage.

Caring for your Politzer ear specula

Clean the specula soon after use, since dried wax sticks to the inner wall. Use a small brush, then rinse and dry them well. Finally, sterilize them in a tray.
