Description
Olivecrona Wire Saw for Cranial Opening
The Olivecrona wire saw cuts skull bone between two burr holes. Neurosurgeons use it to open a bone flap when they perform a craniotomy by hand.
How the wire saw works
First, the surgeon drills burr holes around the planned flap. Next, a saw guide passes under the bone from one hole to the next, protecting the dura. Then the wire saw follows the guide, and the surgeon pulls it back and forth to cut outward.
Five lengths
We sell the Olivecrona wire saw in 30, 41, 51, 61 and 71 cm lengths. Shorter saws suit small flaps and short cuts. Longer saws, by contrast, give more working length between the handles.
Part of a manual craniotomy set
Many hospitals keep wire saws as a backup to powered craniotomes. They also suit settings without power tools. In either case, the set needs saw handles and a saw guide as well.
Choosing a length
Think about the size of the flaps you usually cut. Also consider how your handles attach and how much wire you like between them. If you are unsure, start with a middle length such as 51 cm.
Caring for your Olivecrona wire saw
Rinse bone dust out of the wire straight after use. Then clean it carefully with a brush, working along the wire rather than across it. Dry it fully, coil it loosely and sterilize it following your policy.

Ordering your wire saw
Wire saws from us come with a three-year warranty that addresses workmanship defects. Before a saw leaves Atlanta, we examine it by hand. You can read about shipping, payment and tax on our FAQs page. When you check steel quality, ASTM F899 is the standard for surgical instrument materials. To complete the set, add a wire saw handle. Then look at our neurosurgery instruments for guides and rongeurs.
For professional use. A wire saw may look different in photos, so our care and sterilization guide explains that, plus the role of nickel in the steel. You can read our returns rules too.
