Description

News Tracheal Retractor

The News tracheal retractor is a sharp hook for tracheostomy. Surgeons use it to catch and steady the trachea so they can open it under control.

A sharp hook

We list this pattern with a sharp end. A sharp hook can engage tissue firmly, so it holds well when the trachea moves with breathing. However, it needs careful handling around nearby structures.

Size and handling

The retractor measures 15 cm. That size keeps it light and easy to control with one hand. Therefore, an assistant can hold it steady for some time without strain.

In a tracheostomy

Once the trachea lies open to view, the surgeon may hook a ring to lift it forward. Then the opening and tube insertion follow. A sharp tracheal hook is a common part of this step.

Choosing between sharp and blunt

Some teams prefer a blunt hook for retracting soft tissue. Meanwhile, a sharp hook such as this one suits holding the trachea itself. Many trays carry both kinds for that reason.

Caring for your News tracheal retractor

Protect the sharp point during cleaning, because a blunted tip holds less well. Rinse and brush the hook soon after the case. Then dry the News hook and sterilize it, ideally under a tip guard.
