The Mollison retractor is a self-retaining mastoid retractor. Surgeons set it in the wound during mastoid and ear surgery so that the soft tissue stays spread.

A larger ear retractor

At about 15 cm, this is one of the longer patterns in our self-retaining ear group. It also carries four teeth on each arm. So it spreads a wider incision with an even pull.

4×4 teeth

The listing gives the teeth as 4×4, meaning four on each side. More teeth spread the force along a longer edge. That suits larger flaps in mastoid work.

Prong options

You can order Sharp or Blunt prongs. Sharp prongs hold firmly in thick tissue. Blunt prongs, meanwhile, suit teams that prefer a gentler contact.

Where it fits

Surgeons often pick the Mollison pattern for mastoidectomy and similar procedures. Then a smaller retractor may work alongside it for a second direction of pull. A second retractor at right angles opens the field further.

Caring for your Mollison retractor

Flush the teeth and joint under warm running water after surgery. Then scrub each tooth row with a small nylon brush. Let the Mollison air-dry fully, and keep its teeth guarded in storage after sterilizing.
