Allport Retractor

The Allport retractor is a compact mastoid retractor that holds itself open. Ear surgeons place it during mastoidectomy so the overlying tissue stays apart.

Compact and self-holding

This pattern measures about 10 cm, so it sits neatly beside the ear. Once opened, it holds its position by itself. As a result, the assistant can help elsewhere.

Four teeth per arm

The teeth come as 4×4. Four points on each side spread the pull evenly along the incision. That helps keep a steady view of the mastoid cortex.

Sharp or blunt

We offer both Sharp and Blunt prongs. Sharp prongs anchor well in thicker flaps. Blunt prongs, meanwhile, suit surgeons who want gentler contact with the skin edge.

Choosing between mastoid retractors

Several self-retaining patterns do similar jobs, including the Jansen and the Mollison. However, each has its own size and tooth count. Compare them against your usual incision, or ask us for help.

Caring for your Allport retractor

Open the arms before cleaning and flush the teeth under running water. Next, use a small brush on each tooth and on the joint. Dry the instrument fully, since trapped water can mark the steel.
