Jansen Retractor

The Jansen retractor is a self-retaining mastoid retractor. Ear surgeons use it to spread the soft tissue over the mastoid and hold the wound open.

A classic mastoid pattern

The Jansen name has long been linked with mastoid surgery. This compact retractor stays open without an assistant. Therefore, the surgeon can work with both hands under the microscope.

Four options

You choose the teeth first: 4×4 or 3×3. Then you pick Sharp or Blunt prongs. That gives four combinations, all at 10 cm.

More or fewer teeth

Four teeth per arm spread the pull along a longer edge. Meanwhile, three teeth per arm suit a slightly shorter wound. So the choice depends on the size of incision you usually make.

Sharp or blunt prongs

Sharp prongs grip firmly in thick tissue. Blunt prongs rest more gently against the edge. Undecided teams can buy both prong types and see which they reach for.

Caring for your Jansen retractor

Rinse the teeth right after surgery with the arms open. Also brush between each tooth to clear any residue. Then dry the instrument and sterilize it with your ear set.
