Description
Misch “Spoon” Cheek & Tongue Retractor
The tongue is strong, mobile and quick to fill any space in the lower arch. The misch spoon retractor answers that problem with a cupped blade that holds soft tissue in place. The catalogue names it a cheek and tongue retractor, so it serves both sides of the ridge. This page has one pattern.
Why the Spoon Shape Works
A flat blade tends to slide off a rounded tongue. In contrast, the spoon shape wraps around it and spreads the pressure. Therefore the assistant needs less force to keep the tongue away from the lingual flap. The same curve also cradles the cheek when you work on buccal surfaces.
Lingual Access in the Mandible
Lower molar implants often need a lingual flap, and that is where this retractor helps most. The assistant positions the spoon against the tongue and holds it medially. Meanwhile, the surgeon gets a clear view of the lingual plate. This is especially useful during drilling and suturing near the floor of the mouth.
Pairing With Other Misch Instruments
Dr. Carl Misch’s name appears on several surgical patterns in the implant field. Many surgeons combine this spoon with a ramus retractor for posterior mandible cases. Then one assistant controls the tongue while the other holds the cheek and flap. Together, they open the whole posterior site.
Inspection, Condition on Arrival and Coverage
This retractor is stainless steel, and a US-based inspector reviews it for finish and shape before shipping. It is not supplied sterile, so it must be washed and autoclaved before use on a patient. Our spoon retractor guarantee spans three years against manufacturing defects in blade or handle.
The steel complies with ASTM F899 for surgical stainless steel. Visit our Dental Implant Instruments page for more. For posterior cases, add the Misch Ramus Retractor. Common questions are answered in the FAQs.
Intended for trained clinical users only. Before use, see our care and sterilization page and our shipping details.
