Description
Mikulicz Retractor
The Mikulicz retractor holds the abdominal wall and liver during open upper abdominal surgery. It measures 25 to 26 cm and comes with four blade sizes.
Blade sizes
Choose 85 x 50, 95 x 35, 120 x 50 or 150 x 50 mm. So short blades fit early exposure, and long ones reach under the liver edge. Also, three of the four sizes share a 50 mm width.
Liver retraction
Surgeons use the long blades to lift the liver edge up and away. Then the upper abdomen opens to view beneath it. As a result, gallbladder and stomach work gets easier for the team.
Wall retraction
Shorter blades hold the abdominal wall back at the wound edge. However, the narrow 95 x 35 mm blade fits a tighter gap than the rest. Therefore many teams keep it for slimmer patients.
Tray planning
Upper abdominal trays often carry a long Mikulicz retractor for the liver. Meanwhile, general trays may hold only a shorter one. Plus, a matching pair helps the team retract on both sides.
Cleaning Mikulicz retractor
Clean both faces of the blade and the full handle after surgery. Next, rinse well and look for bends along the blade. Finally, dry it and store the longest size where it can lie flat.
