Description
Meyerding Retractor
The Meyerding retractor is a hand-held laminectomy retractor. It holds the paraspinal muscles back so the surgeon can see the lamina and spinal canal.
A laminectomy classic
Spine surgeons have used Meyerding retractors for decades. The blade sits against the muscle while an assistant pulls on the handle. Because the retractor stays in the hand, tension can change as the case moves on.
Four blade sizes
We offer four blades: 32 x 25, 54 x 25, 60 x 25 and 60 x 19 mm. The 32 mm blade suits shallow wounds. Meanwhile, the 54 and 60 mm blades reach deeper, and the 19 mm width fits narrower openings.
Using it during a laminectomy
After the incision, the surgeon strips muscle from the spinous processes and laminae. Then the assistant places a Meyerding blade on each side. Next, the surgeon works with rongeurs and curettes in the cleared space.
Choosing blade sizes
Match the blade length to patient build and the depth you usually meet. For example, a larger patient often needs a 60 mm blade. Many teams therefore keep two lengths on the same tray.
Caring for your Meyerding retractor
Wash off blood and tissue as soon as the case ends. Then clean the blade and its curve with a soft brush and neutral detergent. Rinse, dry completely and sterilize on your usual program.
