McGee Micro Ear Hook

The McGee micro ear hook is a fine hook used deep in the tympanic cavity. Otologists use it to engage and move small structures, such as graft edges and prosthesis loops.

Why a hook

A needle pushes, but a hook can pull. So the surgeon can draw tissue toward them or lift it gently from beneath. That makes a hook useful for adjusting grafts and prostheses.

Four options

All versions have an angled shaft. First, pick the tip: 1 mm or the finer 0.5 mm. Then decide whether it points upward or downward. That gives four combinations.

Clinical use

Surgeons use micro hooks in stapes surgery and ossicular repair. For instance, they may position the loop of a prosthesis on the incus. They also use hooks to lift the edge of a graft.

Picking a version

The 0.5 mm tip suits the finest tasks. The 1 mm tip, meanwhile, holds tissue more securely. Direction depends on your approach, so many surgeons keep both an upward and a downward hook. Then they never have to twist the wrist awkwardly.

Clean the hook gently, since the tip bends easily. Next, rinse and dry it. Then place it in a micro instrument tray with tip covers for sterilization.
