Description
Martin-Cushing Periosteal Raspatory
The Martin-Cushing periosteal raspatory lifts periosteum away from bone. Neurosurgeons use it to clear the skull or spine before they drill, cut or place a retractor.
Why strip the periosteum
A clean bone surface makes burr holes and bone cuts easier. So the surgeon pushes the raspatory edge under the periosteum and sweeps it back. As a result, the bone lies bare and the soft tissue stays in one layer for closure.
Five working widths
You can choose a 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 mm width. The narrow sizes suit small areas, such as the edge of a burr hole. Meanwhile, the 7 and 8 mm widths cover more bone with each stroke.
Use in cranial and spinal cases
In a craniotomy, the raspatory helps free the pericranium around the planned flap. Surgeons also use it along the lamina and spinous process during a posterior spinal approach. Then retractors can sit directly on clean bone.
Selecting widths for a tray
Many buyers pick two widths rather than one, for example 5 mm and 8 mm. That pairing gives a fine tool and a broad one on the same tray. If you already own a wider raspatory, the smaller sizes fill the gap.
Caring for your Martin-Cushing periosteal raspatory
Clean the working edge soon after surgery, since bone debris can cling to it. Use a soft brush and a neutral detergent, then rinse well. Afterward, dry it thoroughly and run your normal sterilization cycle.

Warranty, inspection and links
Every raspatory ships with a three-year warranty, which covers any flaw in workmanship. In Atlanta, a team member examines it by hand before we pack it. Common questions have short answers on our help and FAQs page. Surgical instrument steels follow the ASTM F899 standard. If you need wider blades up to 20 mm, see the Martin-Hoen periosteal raspatory. You can also return to the neurosurgery section for more.
For professional users. Our instrument care page explains why a picture may differ slightly and notes that stainless alloys contain nickel. Dispatch times appear in the shipping information.
