Description
Martin-Hoen Periosteal Raspatory
The Martin-Hoen periosteal raspatory elevates periosteum and attached muscle from bone. Surgeons reach for it when they need to clear a broad surface quickly, for example along the spine.
A broad elevating edge
Hoen-type raspatories come in wider blades than many fine elevators. Because of that, one pass lifts a large strip of tissue. The surgeon then follows up with a smaller tool in tight corners.
Three widths to choose from
We sell the Martin-Hoen pattern in 7, 15 and 20 mm widths. The 7 mm blade works well near foramina and edges. In contrast, the 15 and 20 mm blades clear wide stretches of lamina or skull.
Typical use in surgery
During a posterior spinal exposure, the surgeon strips muscle off the spinous processes and laminae. Next, the raspatory keeps working outward toward the facets. In a craniotomy, it also helps lift the pericranium before the bone flap.
Building a matched set
Some teams pair a 20 mm blade for bulk work with a 7 mm blade for detail. Others add a narrow Martin-Cushing raspatory too. In short, match the widths to the exposures you perform most often.
Caring for your Martin-Hoen periosteal raspatory
Remove tissue and bone dust from the blade immediately after use. Then scrub it with a soft brush in a mild detergent solution. Rinse it, dry it completely and sterilize it on your standard program.
