Description
Martel Tissue & Organ Holding Forceps
The Martel forceps are a compact tissue holding forceps. At 14 cm, they suit superficial and moderate depth work where a long forceps would feel clumsy.
Compact length
Fourteen centimetres keeps the hand close to the jaws. Consequently, the user feels the grip precisely and can adjust it quickly.
Uses of the Martel forceps
General surgeons use them on fascia, small organs and tissue to be excised. They also suit breast and hernia work.
Grip
The jaws hold firm tissue securely with the ratchet engaged. As a result, traction stays steady without hand fatigue.
Technique
Grasp only the tissue you need, preferably tissue that will be removed. Then lock lightly and check the hold.
Martel or Willet-Martel
For deeper fields, the 19 cm Willet-Martel adds reach. In addition, many trays carry both lengths.
Small trays
Day surgery sets need compact tools. For that reason, the Martel often appears on them.
Martel forceps in hernia repair
During an inguinal hernia repair, the sac often needs firm, steady traction while the surgeon frees it from the cord. Here, a short holding forceps keeps that pull even, and the ratchet means the assistant’s hand can stay relaxed.
