Description
Malleable Haberer Retractor
The Haberer retractor is a bendable, double-ended spatula for holding organs out of the field. Each end has its own width, so one piece gives you two options.
Two widths per piece
The 25/30 mm size has a 25 mm end and a 30 mm end. Likewise, the 37/45 and 40/50 mm sizes pair a narrower blade with a wider one. So you flip the spatula instead of reaching for another tool.
Shaping it by hand
Surgeons bend the spatula by hand to match the curve of the organ. Then it holds that curve while the assistant draws back. As a result, it follows tissue that a rigid blade would press on.
Lengths
The 25/30 mm piece measures 28 cm overall. By contrast, the 37/45 and 40/50 mm pieces run 30 cm. That extra length helps in a deep chest or abdomen.
Typical use
Abdominal teams use a Haberer retractor to hold bowel, liver or stomach aside. Also, thoracic surgeons shape it around lung tissue. Because it bends, one size often covers several angles.
Care of Haberer retractor
Straighten the spatula gently after each case, since repeated sharp kinks can weaken the metal. Next, wash both ends and rinse off detergent. Finally, dry it and lay it flat in the tray.
